Assuming you're off-campus, you will always need to authenticate at some point in order to gain direct access to our Springer content at http://link.springer.com/ (NOT www.springer.com). What you can do is either log in at the library website or add the proxy address to the URL:
http://ezproxy.wheaton.edu/login?url=http://link.springer.com/
For it to work either way, you need to have a current college network account.
